Return to Paris and Reconstruction

After the revolutionary Terror ended, Breguet returned to Paris in May 1795. He reorganized his business and developed new models, notably a “simple” (non-striking) watch with a single hand, called a “subscription watch.” It was launched by an advertising leaflet that invited subscribers to make a down-payment of one quarter of the price.

In June 1796, he ran for election to the mechanical arts branch of the Académie des Sciences, but he was defeated by rival candidate, Lazare Carnot.

In 1798, Breguet displayed his wares at France’s first National Industrial Exhibition, where he won a gold medal.
