Perpetuelle was the name Breguet gave to watches with automatic self-winding. The perfection of this system was the first major achievement of his career. He discovered the formula – through his watch with an oscillating weight fixed laterally – for making a reliable automatic watch. From the 1780s onward, Breguet’s self-winding watches were to bring him considerable fame at the court of Versailles and throughout Europe.
